Jess Flame is one person, one studio, and a stove that has seen better days. Here is exactly how a candle gets made and what goes into it.
Not a marketing limit. It's the largest batch that can be poured before the wax cools past the point where fragrance binds properly.
Every batchLids off, in a dark room, before anything ships. It's the step most candles skip and the reason theirs fade an hour in.
Before it shipsWax, wick, fragrance oil, glass. Nothing else goes in, and all four are listed on every product page.
Nothing hiddenThe story
Jess spent a year buying candles that promised a great deal on the label and delivered almost nothing once they were lit. The scent would vanish within the hour. The wax would tunnel straight down the middle and leave half the jar stuck to the glass.
So she started blending her own — badly at first, then less badly. The twelfth batch was the first one worth giving away. Friends asked for more, then friends of friends, and at some point a hobby turned into a small business with a waiting list.
What hasn't changed is the method. Same recipe, same batch size, same two-week cure, same person pouring. It just happens more often now.
Start to finish
Order matters here — skip the cure and the fragrance never fully binds to the wax.
Fragrance oils are weighed to a fixed ratio and held at 185°F so nothing separates before it's poured.
Into warmed jars, in one steady pour. Cold glass is what causes those wet-looking patches down the side.
Two full weeks, lids off, in the dark. Nothing about this step can be rushed or shortened.
Wicks trimmed, labels set by hand, every jar briefly test-lit before it's boxed with a thank-you card.
What goes in
Burns cleaner and cooler than paraffin, holds more fragrance than soy on its own, and doesn't leave soot on the glass.
Lead-free and zinc-free, sized to each jar's diameter so the melt pool reaches the edge instead of tunnelling.
From two US suppliers, both of whom publish their safety data. We'll send it on request for any scent.
No paraffin. It's cheaper and throws scent hard, but it's a petroleum by-product and it sooties the glass. No dyes. They add nothing to how a candle burns or smells, which is why our wax is an unremarkable off-white.
No "fragrance" as a catch-all ingredient. Every oil we use is disclosed and its safety data is available. And no rushed cure — we'd rather tell you a scent is sold out for two weeks than ship one that fades.
